PG vs. VG: How the Ratio in Your E-Liquid Affects Your Vaping Experience

14 Oct 2025

Whether you're using a complex mod or a convenient disposable vape, the liquid inside is what defines your experience. But look at any e-liquid bottle, and you’ll see cryptic acronyms that can be confusing: PG and VG.

These two ingredients—Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin—form the base of almost every e-liquid. They are colorless, odorless liquids that, when mixed and heated, create the vapor you inhale. But they do very different jobs. The ratio of PG to VG in your juice is the single biggest factor that determines your throat hit, flavor intensity, and cloud size.

Let’s break down what PG and VG are and how to find the perfect ratio for your vaping style.

What is Propylene Glycol (PG)?

Propylene Glycol is a thin, food-grade liquid that serves as one of the primary carriers for nicotine and flavor in your e-liquid. You can find PG in many everyday products, from food additives to asthma inhalers.

In vaping, PG is known for three key things:

  1. A Strong "Throat Hit": PG is what provides that sharp sensation at the back of your throat that many ex-smokers look for. It effectively mimics the feeling of smoking a traditional cigarette.
  2. Excellent Flavor Carrier: Because it's so thin and effective as a solvent, PG carries flavor concentrates exceptionally well. E-liquids with a higher PG content often have a clearer, more intense flavor profile.
  3. Low Vapor Production: PG doesn't create thick, dense clouds. Its focus is on flavor and sensation.

This makes high-PG liquids perfect for Mouth-To-Lung (MTL) devices, where the goal is a cigarette-like experience with concentrated flavor rather than massive clouds.

What is Vegetable Glycerin (VG)?

Vegetable Glycerin is a thicker, slightly sweet liquid derived from vegetable oils. Like PG, it's widely used in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products.

In the world of vaping, VG is the star of the show when it comes to vapor:

  1. Massive Vapor Clouds: VG is responsible for producing the thick, dense clouds that are synonymous with modern vaping. The higher the VG content, the bigger and thicker the clouds will be.
  2. A Smoother Inhale: Unlike the sharp hit from PG, VG provides a much smoother, gentler feeling on the throat. This is ideal for Direct-To-Lung (DTL) vaping, where you inhale vapor directly into your lungs.
  3. Subtle Sweetness: VG has a natural sweetness that can slightly alter the flavor of your e-liquid, often rounding out sharp notes and adding body.

Because it's so thick, high-VG juice works best in more powerful devices with larger wicking channels, like sub-ohm tanks and rebuildable atomizers.

Finding Your Perfect Ratio

Most e-liquids use a blend of both PG and VG to balance their effects. Here are the most common ratios and what to expect from each:

50/50 VG/PG - The Balanced Blend

  • Best for: New vapers, pod systems, and MTL tanks.
  • What you get: A perfect middle ground. This ratio provides a noticeable throat hit, good flavor, and a discreet amount of vapor. It's the ideal starting point for anyone switching from smoking and is the standard for most disposable vapes due to its excellent balance.

70/30 VG/PG - The Cloud Chaser's Standard

  • Best for: DTL vaping, sub-ohm tanks, and anyone who wants big clouds.
  • What you get: This is the most popular ratio for a reason. It delivers huge, dense clouds and a silky smooth inhale, while still providing excellent flavor. As noted in DTL vapes, high VG e-liquids are key for producing smoother, richer clouds.

Max VG (80% VG or higher) - The Competitive Edge

  • Best for: Cloud competitions, dripping atomizers (RDAs), and vapers who are sensitive to PG.
  • What you get: The largest, densest clouds possible. The inhale is incredibly smooth, but the flavor might be more subtle compared to other blends.

Which Ratio is Right for You?

Choosing the right PG/VG ratio comes down to your personal preference and your vaping device:

  • For a cigarette-like experience with a strong throat hit and intense flavor (MTL): Choose a 50/50 blend or one with slightly higher PG.
  • For massive clouds and a super-smooth inhale (DTL): Go for a 70/30 VG/PG blend or higher.
  • Device Matters: A small pod system may struggle to wick thick, high-VG juice, leading to burnt hits. Conversely, a thin 50/50 juice might leak from a high-powered DTL tank. Always match your juice to your hardware.

Understanding the difference between PG and VG empowers you to tailor your vaping experience perfectly. Don't be afraid to experiment with different ratios—you might just discover your perfect vape.
